The Wauwatosa School Board on Monday voted to spend nearly $1 million to upgrade surveillance cameras and security access across the district.
The district has budgeted $500,000 for the project in its 2010-11 budget, and another $492,000 will come from a federal grant.
Wauwatosa has cameras and other security features in place now, but the schools' resource officers have said those systems need to be upgraded. The new access system also could be expanded to allow centralized control of heating, cooling and other functions in buildings across the district.
While the motion was approved unanimously, Board Members Phil Kroner and Mary Jo Randall said they had concerns about to what extent other agencies - such as the Police and Fire departments - would be allowed to access the video system. Superintendent Phil Ertl said language on the access policy would come before the School Board before the system is in place.
The upgrades are expected to take place throughout the current school year.
