Grant helps homeowners weatherize homes

Dec. 15, 2010

Wauwatosa homeowners with children younger than 6 in the house may qualify for grant money to help weatherize doors and windows.

The Heath Department is looking for five owners of single-family homes built prior to 1978 or home day care providers. Eligible people will also need to meet federal low- and moderate income guidelines.

There is money available to prevent lead poisoning of children, which often occurs from chipping household paint, especially with the friction caused by opening and closing windows and doors.

The department plans to start small and see how much of a commitment working with five households will entail, said Nursing Supervisor Lori Nielsen. But the program could be expanded depending on interest and resources available. Any homeowners who thinks they may qualify are encouraged to call (414) 479-8939 to get on the list.
