You need look no further than its name to know what Maxie's Southern Comfort is all about.

"We serve various types of Southern cuisine," explains co-owner Dan Sidner. "Cajun, low country, regional barbecue and lots of fresh fish that is flown in fresh, six days a week."

Sidner and co-owner/executive chef Joe Muench opened Maxie's in May of 2007 on the corner of 68th Street and Fairview Avenue, just north of Interstate 94. Along with the Southern cuisine, they have managed to create a sense of Southern hospitality, warmth and fun that fills every corner. And it all starts with a basket of homemade cornbread on your table, the minute you sit down.

The restaurant has two stories, each with its own bar. The décor is casual and cozy and yet open and inviting. But the real reason to visit Maxie's is the food. As Sidner explains: "Southern cooking is simply the greatest of all American regional cuisines. We felt like nobody else in Milwaukee was offering a full range of southern cooking."

Some of Maxie's signature dishes include shrimp and grits ($13.95 half/$17.95 full), Jambalaya "Me-Oh-My-A" ($16.95) and the Eastern North Carolina pulled pork plate ($13.95.) Maxie's also has daily specials and a happy hour with drink specials, raw oysters and peel-and-eat shrimp.

"We feel that Maxie's is the best value in town," Sidner said. "We offer a high level of cooking, quality and service at a price point far below most white-table restaurants. We make everything from scratch."

Sidner and Muench are the owners of Blue's Egg on 76th Street and Bluemound Road. Blue's Egg serves breakfast and lunch, and Maxie's serves dinner. Both restaurants have a tradition of giving back to local organizations such as the Pool at Hoyt Park in Wauwatosa.
