Union protests work on new Pick 'n Save

Feb. 13, 2009

Construction on a new Pick 'n Save on Mayfair Road has drawn protest from a local union.

Preliminary construction work has started on the grocery store at the northwest corner of Mayfair and Walnut roads, and members of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 139 have been protesting at the site since Wednesday.

The protesters say the contractor on the project, Winneconne-based Radtke Contracting, is providing substandard benefits and wages for workers.

The protesters also are upset because they feel Roundy's Supermarkets - which owns Pick 'n Save - should have given more consideration to local contractors on the project, said Dave Parkinson, organizer with Local 139.

Parkinson said 25 to 30 people have been protesting the site every day.

Representatives from Roundy's and Radtke could not immediately be reached for comment.
