City to provide rebates for rain gardens

March 4, 2009

Wauwatosa property owners who installed rain gardens last year can apply for a reimbursement from the city.

In 2008, a state matching grant allowed the city to pay back property owners $4 per square foot up to 400 feet as an incentive to create rain gardens, which manage volume, rate and quality of stormwater runoff.

With a limited time to spend the grant money, the Common Council last night agreed to allow property owners that have rain gardens larger than 400 feet to apply to the Public Works Department for reimbursement for up to 500 feet.

In addition, the council increased the reimbursement rate to $5 per square foot up to 500 feet in a effort to sway more property owners to install rain gardens this year.

The city will provide information about how to install a rain garden and the benefits to the property owners and greater community for doing so during Rain Gardens for Wauwatosa from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 19, in the Riverview Room on the second floor of the Muellner Building in Hart Park, 7300 Walnut St.

For information, call the Public Works Department at (414) 479-8991.
