Tosa police to join regional drunken driving task force

April 21, 2009

Wauwatosa Police Department has joined a drunken driving crackdown effort that could serve as a model to law enforcement agencies nationwide.

The Southeast Wisconsin Drunk Driving Task Force, a group made up of 13 police and two sheriff's departments, officially starts operating Saturday. Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will follow the program and, if it proves successful, will encourage other metropolitan areas to replicate it.

If a pilot deployment is any indication, the task force has already started making an impact, Wauwatosa Lt. Tim Sharpee said. On Brewers opening day, 31 drunken drivers were arrested, eight of whom were stopped by Wauwatosa officers.

"The goal is to stop, test and arrest drunk drivers," he said.
