Wauwatosa's Community Development Committee on Tuesday will continue to debate the details of a proposed ordinance regarding the sale of naming rights for city property.
Last week, the Common Council sent the proposal back to the committee because of a disagreement about whether the council should get involved in naming rights decisions when transactions reach the $5,000 realm or city staff should handle anything less than $25,000.
The proposed policy's author, Alderman Dennis McBride, said he feels the dollar amount threshold is the most important aspect of the document because it gives residents a chance to voice their opinions and the council an opportunity to weigh in on naming rights.
"This is city property, so we want to make sure the name is appropriate," he said. "City government never goes wrong with more public opinion."
Too many possibilities for naming rights - for instance a tennis court or stadium score board - could fall between the two dollar amounts, he said.
