Groundbreaking for fire station is Tuesday

July 13, 2009

Wauwatosa officials will break ground on a replacement Fire Station No. 1 at 11 a.m. Tuesday and will open a time capsule buried in 1942, when the Fire Department moved into its existing building.

To mark the occasion, the Fire Department Honor Guard will perform a flag ceremony and local officials will speak. The public is invited to attend. Refreshments will follow.

No parking spaces will available on the fire station site. Visitors can check for parking at the city lots at Blanchard Street, or the Little Red Store, 7720 Harwood Ave.

The new station will go up at 1463 Underwood Ave., just north of the existing station. Voters approved construction of the facility in an April 2008 referendum. The new 29,500-square-foot, two-story station will offer more space for apparatus storage and maintenance and training activities, modern mechanical systems and sustainable design features.
