Scout creating guide to local historical cemetery

Aug. 3, 2009

Wauwatosa Cemetery is the final resting place for members of the Hart, Harwood, Hoyt and Underwood families, which have had local parks and streets named in their honor.

Soon, visitors to the historic cemetery, 2405 Wauwatosa Ave., will be able to better find their memorials thanks to Patrick Merz, a member of Whitman Boy Scout Troop 111 working toward the Eagle Scout rank. He has created a Web site that includes a listing of who is buried there - full names, birth and death dates and burial plots - and linked photos of their headstones for research purposes.

The project, which remains a work in progress, has required hours of looking through cemetery records and verifying information.

Patrick has worked with the cemetery's board and management company, and organized volunteers who helped clean up and photograph headstones.

Anyone with information about the people buried at Wauwatosa Cemetery is encouraged to contact him. See his work at www.wauwatosacemetery.info.

Patrick's site is expected to be linked to the cemetery's Web site, www.wauwatosacemetery.net, in the next few weeks.
