District ACT scores, participation fall slightly

Aug. 21, 2009

The average Wauwatosa ACT score fell slightly this year, decreasing to 23.6 from 23.8 last year, but the district again outscored the state and the nation, according to data from the state Department of Public Instruction.

Students statewide averaged a composite score of 22.2 on the 36-point college entrance exam, down from 22.3. Students nationwide averaged 21.1 for the second year.

The district's scores dropped 0.1 to 0.4 points in the four categories tested - reading, English, math and science.

Beth Erenberger, district director of student learning, said she was pleased the scores held steady, but said district leaders will focus on improving scores in the future.

Participation was down districtwide: 68.9 percent of graduating seniors took the test, down from 69.5 percent last year. Erenberger said the district wants more students to take the test. Statewide, 57 percent of graduates took the test. Nationwide participation was 45 percent.
