West student's film to be featured at festival

Sept. 4, 2009

A film written by Wauwatosa West High School student Natalie Mullins will be screened at the Milwaukee Film Festival next month.

"Ward Three" came out of the Collaborative Cinema 2009 program, a screenplay writing contest for local high school students, as well as a series of workshops for students to learn about the ins and outs of filmmaking. Mullins, the contest winner, had the opportunity this summer to work with a professional filmmaking team to have her screenplay turned into a film.

"Ward Three" will be shown as part of the Milwaukee Showcase program of shorts at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Oriental Theatre in downtown Milwaukee.

Her film is about a boy who finds himself institutionalized at a young age and spends his life searching for harmony in the halls of Ward Three. The film was shot on Milwaukee County land on Watertown Plank Road in Wauwatosa. The project cost about $100,000, and the funding and film-making services were all donated.
