Canoes, kayaks can now be launched in Tosa

Sept. 8, 2009

The public can now launch canoes and kayaks on the Menomonee River because the Common Council last week unanimously voted to repeal an ordinance prohibiting such activities.

State law stipulates all navigable waters in Wisconsin are held in trust for use by the public. However, until the council repealed the ordinance, the self-propelled boating on the waterway was legal, but actually getting onto the river was a problem, City Attorney Alan Kesner said.

The land along the river is designated as parkway and owned by Milwaukee County. While the county allows self-propelled boats; however, the city was prohibiting launching watercraft from county lands.
