Medical college gets $1.6M grant to study dyslexia

Sept. 21, 2009

The Medical College of Wisconsin received a $1.62 million grant that will continue funding research that could help experts better understand what causes dyslexia and how to treat it.

The funding comes from the National Institutes of Health to study brain function disorders and their impact on the recognition of speech sounds and the understanding of spoken language. Delineating the brain areas involved in different aspects of processing speech is a key building block for developing a functional map of the cerebral cortex, where memory and language perception take place.

Additionally, a map of the cerebral cortex is a valuable tool for surgical planning.
