Man arrested just hours after getting released from jail

Sept. 22, 2009

Little more than two hours after his release from the House of Correction, a Wauwatosa man found himself in handcuffs again.

Michael Bernt, 19, allegedly took his mother's car and now has been charged with felony auto theft.

According to a Wauwatosa Police Department report:

Bernt was let out of jail about midnight Saturday. He walked to his mother's Wauwatosa house, violating a restraining order she took out against him anticipating his release. He had spent a couple month at the House of Correction because he intentionally rammed his mother's vehicle while she was in it.

His mother heard the sound of her car starting in the driveway at 1:49 a.m. and looked out the window to see the car backing down the driveway.

At 2:19 a.m., officers pulled Berndt over at Highway 45 and Watertown Plank Road. They took him to Milwaukee County Mental Health because he said not having anywhere to go was making him feel suicidal.

After he was released, he was taken the county Criminal Justice Facility.
