Tosa vote would kill bid to reduce Common Council
Wauwatosa — The Common Council, the largest in Milwaukee County, will be asked Tuesday night to kill a proposal to reduce its size from 16 aldermen to 10.
The proposed change in council size would be placed on file with no action taken, according to the agenda for the 7:30 p.m. meeting.
The council, meeting as the Committee of the Whole Sept. 15, voted 12-1 with three aldermen absent to recommend that the council file the proposal.
Four former aldermen spoke against the proposal, which won support only from Ald. Dennis McBride, according to minutes from that meeting.
Here are the number of aldermen in the county's other cities, according to each city's Web site:
Cudahy and Greenfield: 5
Franklin, St. Francis and Oak Creek: 6
South Milwaukee: 8
West Allis: 10
Glendale: 12
Milwaukee: 15
Like Wauwatosa, the councils in Glendale, St. Francis, West Allis and South Milwaukee have two aldermen per district; the other cities have one.
