City to get extra nurse to help deal with the flu

Oct. 7, 2009

The Wauwatosa Health Department will hire a full-time nurse position to help shoulder the extra workload it is facing from the swine flu pandemic and upcoming vaccination clinics.

The Common Council on Tuesday voted 14-1 to use an $119,000 federal grant to pay for the salary and benefits of a nurse over the next year.

The Health Department H1N1 vaccine clinics will be announced as soon as an adequate supply of vaccine becomes available.

When the clinics start, the follow population groups will be the first ones to be vaccinated: pregnant women; people with household contact and care-givers for children younger than 6 months; health care and emergency medical services personnel; people 25 through 64 years with a higher risk of medical complications from the flu; and people ages 6 months through 24 years.
