Supporters line up to push Brookfield beekeeping

July 28, 2016 3:15 p.m. | A swarm of beekeeping supporters brought buzz to last week's Brookfield common council meeting.

Last month, alderman Bob Reddin passed along an inquiry from a constituent regarding residents installing and maintaining honey bees on their property.

Residents from Brookfield and other nearby communities lined up during a Tuesday, July 19, public comment portion in order to voice their support.

"We're not asking the city of Brookfield to allow hundreds of hives or commercial honey production on residential property," resident Scott Offord said. "Beekeeping is important to a lot of people. It will not cause problems for the city of Brookfield. Beekepers are responsible citizens who care for nature and all it offers."

Offord told aldermen that beekeeping already exists in the city, whether it is technically allowed or not.

Brookfield Bulldogs, Pewaukee Muskies to continue game at later date

July 26, 2016 1:14 p.m. | Jason Booth was faced with a tough decision.

On one hand, the Brookfield Bulldogs' skipper could have accepted a crucial win for his team. But to the veteran manager, that wouldn't have been the right way to end a well-played game between two Land O'Lakes rivals on July 23.

Lighting and rain suspended play between Brookfield and the Pewaukee Muskies, with the Bulldogs hitting in the bottom of the seventh with the score tied 1-1. The Muskies had just tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh. Per league rules, the game would have reverted back to the last completed inning and gone final.

That would have meant a 1-0 win for the Bulldogs. Instead, Booth agreed to pick the game up where it left off at a date to be determined.

"It was absolutely a tough call," Booth said. "The grand championship over the last five years have been decided between these two teams. It was a heck of a tough call, but I think it was the right and honest thing to do. We'll settle it like men on the field, and the better team will win."

Brookfield Blue Sox pick up key win over West Bend

July 26, 2016 12:08 p.m. | With five games left in the season, the Brookfield Blue Sox are right in the Land O'Lakes playoff mix.

The Blue Sox moved into a tie for the third and final playoff spot from the Suburban Division with a 8-3 victory over the West Bend Lithia on July 23 at Carl M. Kuss Field.

West Bend jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning off Ben Versnik, but the Blue Sox scored six in the top of the second and didn't look back. Brookfield added runs in the seventh and ninth to cruise to a comfortable win over the last-place Lithia.

Making his second start of the season, Versnik struck out 10 and allowed just one earned run on two hits over six innings. The right-hander has allowed just one run over 18 innings (0.50 ERA) this season. Kyle Stewart struck out eight over the final three innings.

Johnny Arnold went 2-for-4 with a walk, and Tim Kahle was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Will Johnson drove in three runs, while Pat Tobiasz and Zach Loss each had two RBIs.

Wisconsin Athletic Club nearing town of Brookfield opening

July 21, 2016 6:00 p.m. | A former student at the University of Phoenix or a movie-lover from years past might not even recognize the building at 20075 Watertower Blvd.

The structure, which has housed a movie theater, a community college and an office building, is in the process of an extreme makeover as the Wisconsin Athletic Club prepares its newest location.

Last fall, the WAC announced plans to move its current Waukesha club, 1530 E. Moreland Blvd., to the town of Brookfield after seaching locations for more than five years.

At that time, officials were uncertain on a timeline for the club and what amenities it would include. Details have become more clear on both subjects in recent months.

"We're looking at a late summer or early fall opening," Wisconsin Athletic Club chief executive officer Ray O'Connor said. "We are planning on letting our members know in August once we know an exact date."

Brookfield Central baseball unable to pull upset in regional loss to Sussex Hamilton

July 19, 2016 9:26 p.m. | It wasn't an ideal first-round matchup for the fifth seeded Hamilton baseball team. Brookfield Central, the 12th seed in its bracket, finished the season 7-24, but had won three of its final four regular-season contests. Even with Central's ace Justin Stollberg on the mound, a July 12 regional semifinal went Hamilton's way, 8-2, after a strong hitting performance from the Chargers.

Hamilton's top of the lineup got on Central in the bottom of the first with three consecutive hits by Sam Herriges, Drake Schreihart and Carson Youngquist. Youngquist's single past first base scored Herriges, and two batters later, Ty Botsford drove in Schreihart for a 2-0 lead.

Central scored two runs in the top of the second, with one run coming off Dillon Sehmer's single over the Hamilton second baseman's head to score John Schneider.

Youngquist said the Chargers weren't frustrated after Central tied the game at 2.

"Unearned runs have been the story of our season," Youngquist said. "But we've been so used to being tied or down, we've come back from everything before. I think those hits we had early on in the next inning really helped us out a lot. Then we went up ... and carried it from there."

July 19, 2016 2:56 p.m. | The Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-Star Game is the last chance for prep football fans to see the state's top senior talent before they head off to college.

This year, it was also the final game for a Hall of Fame head coach.

Retiring Brookfield East coach Tom Swittel went out with a victory, as he led the South team to a 17-7 victory in the WFCA All-Star Game at UW-Oshkosh's Titan Stadium on July 16.

The North team took a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Kimberly's Blair Mullholland with 11:42 left in the second quarter. South answered to tie the game just before halftime on a 9-yard touchdown run by Middleton's Cam Maly.

After missing a field goal in the second quarter, Brookfield East's T.C. Swittel drilled a 31-yard kick to put South up 10-7 with 8:03 left in the third. Maly later made it 17-7 with a 5-yard touchdown burst with 2:43 to play in the third.
