Two more newcomers join spring race for city council seats

Dec. 9, 2009

The municipal judge will seek another term in office and three more people have declared their candidacy for seats on Wauwatosa's Common Council.

Judge Richard Baker's name will appear on the April election ballot. The position of municipal judge is a four-year term and comes with a salary of $23,000. So far no challengers have joined the race.

Also, one incumbent and two newcomers have announced they are running to become alderwomen. Fourth District Alderwoman Jill Organ is seeking re-election. Organ was appointed in spring 2008 when Jill Didier left her aldermanic post to became mayor. Organ then won the spring 2009 election to finish the remainder of that term. This time she is running for a four-year term.

In the 2nd District, Kathleen Causier will run for the Common Council seat. The incumbent is James Krol, who has not filed candidacy papers yet.

As for the 3rd District, Sandra Callaghan will run to represent the district. She could not be reached for comment. The incumbent is Tim Hanson, who has not filed candidacy papers, but has said he plans to run again.

These council candidates join newcomer Bobby Pantuso in the 5th District and incumbents Cheryl Berdan and Don Birschel in the 7th District, who all previously announced campaigns for office.

One of the two seats from each of the city's eight aldermanic districts will be up for election. In addition, two other council seats that were filled by appointments due to midterm resignations also will appear on the ballot.

An alderman gets paid $350 per month and is eligible to participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System.

Any Wauwatosa resident interested in running for alderman can pick up a candidate packet from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the clerk's office in City Hall, 7725 W. North Ave. Forms also are available for download at elections.state.wi.us. A campaign registration statement must be filed before a candidate can circulate nomination papers, receive contributions or spend money on a campaign.

Nomination papers and a declaration of candidacy form are due to the city clerk's office by 5 p.m. Jan. 5.

If more than two candidates file papers for any seat, a primary will be held Feb. 16.
