Voter ID petition drive at library Saturday

A group of Wauwatosa residents hoping to get the city to hold an advisory referendum on state-issued voter IDs have about one-third of number of signatures they need to collect in order to get the question on an election ballot.

Organizers will be collecting more signatures from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Wauwatosa Public Library, said Alderwoman Jacqueline Jay, who is spearheading the effort.

"People will be able to come to sign the petition, and people can turn in their petitions that they have been circulating," she said.

The group would need to collect 3,656 signatures, or 15 percent of the number of votes cast by Wauwatosa residents in the last election for governor, by Monday to trigger direct legislation. So far, people have turned in about 1,000 signatures to Jay, but they may have more to turn in on Saturday, she said.

The deadline has passed to get this referendum on the April ballot, but if they get enough signatures the measure could appear on the fall ballot.
