Gypsy moth spraying expected in next few weeks

May 8, 2010

Residents of Wauwatosa's northwest side should not be alarmed if they wake up to the loud sound of a low-flying plane some morning if the next couple of weeks.

The Department of Natural Resources expects to spray for gypsy moth caterpillars in a 31-acre area between 104th and 106th streets and Courtland and Ruby avenues.

The ability to spray depends on the weather. When plans do fly over the area, it likely will happen about 5 a.m.

The caterpillars are an invasive and destructive pest that feeds on the leaves of many species of trees and shrubs. These areas are treated to prevent damage from gypsy moths and to reduce their populations to more sustainable levels. Global Positioning System technology is used to accurately target the intended areas, according to the DNR.

Although it's rare that people have an adverse reaction to the spray, the DNR recommends people in the area stay indoors and keep their windows closed in order to avoid direct exposure.
