Tech group to learn more about Innovation Park at luncheon

May 10, 2010

Now that the Wauwatosa Common Council has approved the rezoning and preliminary development plan for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's proposed Innovation Park on the County Grounds, university officials are ready to share their vision of project with members of the business and technology community who could benefit from the campus.

Innovation Park, a combination graduate engineering and applied science school and research park, will be the topic of the Wisconsin Innovation Network's meeting Thursday at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 10499 Innovation Drive. WIN is the membership arm of the Tech Council, an independent, science and technology adviser to the state's elected officials.

The project is being called a "third-generation" research park because it ties the academic and research enterprise of university directly to the development of a private-sector park.

Michael Lovell, dean of UWM's Engineering College, and David Gilbert, senior adviser to the university's chancellor, will give an overview of the plans for the $250 million development. First up, a 20,000-square-feet building for UWM researchers and engineers working for businesses that plan to move into the Innovation Park, a plan that Gilbert believes will link academics and industry.

Registration and networking begins at 11:30 a.m., lunch at noon and the presentation at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $10 for students, $25 for WIN members, Governor's Business Plan Contest participants and Milwaukee County Research Park tenants, and $35 for non-members.
