The Wauwatosa School District has received two $250 teacher grants from the National Fluid Power Association, benefitting Longfellow and Whitman middle schools.
Beginning this school year, all sixth-graders are engaged in the district's upgraded technology education curriculum, which includes science, technology, engineering and math, according to a district news release.
Grant money from the NFPA were used to purchase kits students will use to learn about fluid power mechanics.
The district modified curriculum to accommodate scheduling changes at the sixth-grade level and support its commitment to STEM education and learning. A tenet of the curriculum is engineering modeling and design that requires students to build levers that incorporate pneumatic and hydraulic action. The course concludes with four-member teams putting their designs to the test in a schoolwide competition.
The $250 grants, along with a partnership with the NFPA, have assisted the school district in developing and upgrading curriculum and maintaining high levels of programming.
