Meijer seeks approval for store on Burleigh in Wauwatosa
Retailer would sell mostly groceries
Meijer, the big box retailer, is seeking approval from the city to build a store at 11123 W. Burleigh Road, on the site of the old Stroh Die Casting plant. The site is on the south side of Burleigh, between 112th Street and the railroad tracks to the east.
Alderman Brian Ewerdt, who represents the area, said the store would be 157,000 square feet, with 65 percent dedicated to selling groceries and 35 percent to selling other retail items.
Meijer, based in Michigan, is making inroads in southeastern Wisconsin, seeking stores in Franklin and Grafton.
"I'm not opposed to it - I'm not jumping up and down," Ewerdt said. "In my mind we've got a lot of grocery stores in the Tosa area," but a Meijer study said the area was underserved in terms of square footage of grocery.
"They're picking this spot because they know that there will be that HSA development," he said.
Developer HSA is pursuing a large-scale development across the street, in the so-called Burleigh Triangle.
City planner Tammy Szudy said the proposed Meijer store is smaller than those sought in Franklin and Grafton, and Meijer is not requesting a gas station and convenience store associated with it.
She said staff support the plan.
"I'll think we'll be fine with this. We just need to work out some details," she said.
She said Meijer hopes to open the store early next year.
Szudy said the HSA development across the street from the Meijer site is seeking approval of a tax-incremental financing district for its development. A TIF district would allow the city to be reimbursed for infrastructure improvements through taxes collected on the land once it is developed, earmarking tax revenue for that purpose.
