Men pretending to be roofers to gain access to Tosa homes

June 5, 2012

Wauwatosa residents beware: Two men are pretending to be roofers so they can enter homes.

According to a Wauwatosa police report:

A homeowner in the 12000 block of Diane Drive was working in his yard when a truck pulled up at 1:30 p.m. May 30. The driver said he was from a roofing company and had been told to come out and check the man's roof.

After asking for a ladder, the driver and homeowner went around the back of the house while the co-worker remained in the truck. Every time the homeowner tried to head back to the front yard, the roofer asked him for assistance. Meanwhile, the roofer spoke Spanish into a hand-held device.

After 15 minutes, the roofer said he was leaving to get shingles and that he would return.

The homeowner noticed doors in the home had been opened and items in the bedroom moved around. It didn't appear anything had been taken.

This is the second reported incident of people pretending to inspect roofs entering Tosa homes.
