Spartans improve Ironman record to 2-0

The Wauwatosa Spartans Football Club improved to 2-0 in Ironman Football League play on Saturday night at Hart Park, defeating the Milwaukee Venom 55-0.

The Spartans were coming off an impressive first game, which saw them dismantle the upstart Elgin Eagles, 56-0, two weeks ago while the Venom came in on the heels of a bitter defeat against the Milwaukee Hurricanes, 14-12.

The Spartans opened the game with scores on each of the first six offensive drives. It started when quarterback Tony Henner found tight end Joey Schutz for a 15-yard completion. The next series saw running back Bobby Windom scamper in from nine yards out, making it 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

It was more of the same in the second quarter, when Henner found wide receiver Raymon Porchia for a 26-yard score and a 21-0 lead. It was quickly followed by a 10-yard touchdown run by running back Kevin Morris to make it 28-0. On the next drive, Henner sneaked in from two yards out to make it 36-0, and kicker Charlie Henke added a 15-yard field goal right before halftime for a 39-0 lead.

The game was essentially over at halftime, when the league-mandated running clock began, making for a quick second half of play. The Spartans still managed to score on their opening two possessions of the second half.

The first came on a 26-yard touchdown catch for Porchia from quarterback Mikey Bernal in the third quarter, which was followed by an 8-yard touchdown run by wide receiver Jonathan Sain at the start of the fourth quarter, making it 55-0.

Running back Jaimie Marton led the Spartans' ground game with 12 rushes for 103 yards. Henner led the passing game, going 11-for-20, with 226 yards and three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. Porchia led the receivers with five catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

The Spartan defense allowed only a handful of first downs and forced two interceptions. The Venom offense wasn't able to get either its passing or running game on track, and never seriously threatened to score.

The Spartans (2-0) travel to Shorewood High School to take on the Shorewood Monarchs. The Monarchs (1-1) are hurting after a 34-6 loss to the Madison Mustangs in Week 2.
