Trojans show that speed kills

During preseason practice, Wauwatosa West coach Matt Good talked about how fast his team was going to be this year. After the Trojans scored 96 points in the first two games of the season, you could see what he was talking about.

Beating a weak St. Francis team, 50-7, in the opener was impressive from the 50 points the Trojans put on the board. That included scores of 62, 58, 51, 74 and 37 yards.

Last Friday, the Trojans took on a solid Whitnall team and walked - ran - away with an even more impressive 46-15 victory. The Trojans had long scores of 53, 93 and 32 yards.

"They are a fast team, and their skill players all have speed," said Whitnall first-year coach Jack Wallack. "Once they get out to the perimeter, they are tough to stop. They are just faster than us. This is one of the better Tosa West teams I have seen. There is a big group of seniors."

"We've got some guys who can run and other teams don't," a happy Tosa West coach Matt Good said afterward. "These guys are just going to continue to outrun guys, as long as we get guys in front of guys. We have some special, special players."

Some of these special players include senior Mickey Morgan and juniors Jameson Brock and Greg Lewis.

"Mickey doesn't come off the field," Good said. "It's a credit to his work ethic. He gets his body ready to go the other nine months of the year. When it's football time, you just see that kid's eyes light up and it's go-time. We rely on him."

Morgan, a two-way player, got the Trojans on the board with a 20-yard touchdown run at 10 minutes, 17 seconds of the first period and then intercepted a pass and raced in from 45 yards out for a 14-0 lead less that two minutes later. He rushed eight times for 77 yards (9.6 yards per carry).

Brock had 127 yards rushing in four attempts (31.8 YPC), which included an amazing 93-yard touchdown run down the sidelines in which he wove in and out of the Falcons secondary while breaking tackles along the way.

"J-Mo's a stud," Good said about his running back. "Another kid who's worked extremely hard, he's just poised to have a great year. Teams are going to have to get ready for him."

And last, but certainly not least, was Lewis, who accounted for 178 of the 466 yards rushing by the Trojans. The stocky running back (5 foot, 8 inches, 211 pounds) punishes runners inside. He averaged 13.7 YPC in 13 carries.

"That's our strategy," Good said. "We're going to run the ball, outside, outside, outside and when teams get tired, we're going to pound you inside. Greg's perfect for that. He just pounds on you."

The Trojans led 14-0 after one quarter, 28-6 at intermission and 33-8 going into the fourth quarter.

Junior quarterback Jared Morzinski completed 6-of-11 for 84 yards and a 20-yard touchdown pass to WR Develyn Ferguson to start the second quarter. He also scored on a 1-yard TD run set up by a long run by Lewis.

Even sophomore running back Demaris Purifoy got on the scoreboard with 5:13 left in the game with an 18-yard run as he rushed for 84 yards in eight carries (10.5 YPC).

The Trojans defense also did a good job. Whitnall rushed for 26 yards, but Whitnall quarterback Zach Sutton was sacked for 27 yards, leaving the Falcons with a -1 yards rushing. Sutton threw for 326 yards and a touchdown and ran for a score.

"Our kids worked their butts off the last nine months," Good said. "It's a tribute to them. They work hard and this is the fruits of their labor.

"They're special. They are doing the things they need to do to be successful."

Tosa West (2-0) now travels to New Berlin West for a 7 p.m. game Sept. 7 against the Vikings (1-1).
