Marquette tops Red Raiders

Big second quarter puts game out of reach

Sept. 25, 2012

A big second quarter broke open a close game as Marquette defeated Wauwatosa East, 40-13, on Friday at Hart Park.

Trailing 14-6 going into the second period, the Red Raiders watched Marquette score three unanswered touchdowns of 76, 18 and 71 yards to take a 34-6 lead into intermission.

"We gave up too many big plays through the air," Tosa East coach Mike Richards said. "We always tell our safeties to be as deep as the deepest receiver and unfortunately on a couple of occasions their receivers got behind our guys."

With the damage done, the Hilltoppers and the Red Raiders exchanged second-half touchdowns.

"We played much better in the second half," Richards said. "We cut down on our mistakes a bit and seemed to play with a little more poise. Again, it all goes back to the boys continuing to battle."

The Red Raiders bounced back quickly after Marquette took a 7-0 lead with 2 minutes, 42 seconds left in the first quarter.

Tosa East quickly bounced back and D.J. Greenhill scored on his only carry, a 6-yard run with 1:48 left to cut the lead to 7-6.

The Red Raiders only had nine rushing attempts for 77 yards, good quality (8.6 yards per carry), but poor quantity.

"But what has been a common factor in our loses this year, we struggled running the ball," Richards said.

Quarterback Christian Tolbert completed 8-of-19 passes for 92 yards and Shaquille Redding had two catches for 108 yards, but 73 of those yards came on one play - a touchdown pass to Redding with 1:22 left in the game.

Richards had some good things to say about Tolbert and Redding afterward.

"Shaq has made some nice plays for us on both offense and defense," he said. "He's an athlete who we can count on regardless of which side of the ball he's on.

"Christian made some nice throws. We are just looking for him to be more consistent and we are confident that he will get there."

The Hilltoppers passed for 214 yards, but were held to 90 yards on the ground.

Richards did have praise for his defense afterward.

"I thought Sam Marszalkowski played well on defense," he said. "That was his first action since coming off an injury that he sustained in the first game of the season.

"Grant Myse has played well on defense for us, too, since being put into the starting lineup last week. He's only a sophomore but he's holding his own."

The Red Raiders are now 1-3 in the Greater Metro Conference and 2-3 overall and they host powerful Sussex Hamilton at 7 p.m. Friday.

"I was proud of our kids. They didn't quit," Richards said. "They kept battling all game long. Yeah, we made some mistakes, but I am proud of their effort."
