Carpenter named Red Raiders' Most Valuable Player

Tosa East also honors Reid, Mabie

Wauwatosa East boys soccer player Ben Carpenter won the Red Raiders' Most Valuable Player award this season as the team awards and all-conference selections were officially announced.

Carpenter earned first-team all-Greater Metro Conference honors and four other teammates were also honored.

Tyson Martens and Vince Kuranz were second-team selections and Kyle Mabie and Landyn Mills were honorable mention.

Carpenter and Martens were four-year varsity players.

Ian Reid earned the Most Improved Player Award and Mabie earned the Coaches' Award.

The Red Raiders' records - without the forfeits - were 9-12-1 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

Marquette won the GMC with an undefeated record in league play and also won the state championship over Kettle Moraine, 2-1.

"Ironically, we played our best match against Marquette," Tosa East coach Eric Dale said. "We were leading in that match with seven minutes to play, 2-1, but ended up losing, 3- 2, when Marquette scored two goals in less than a minute."

But beating Brookfield Central, 2-0, was also a highlight, Dale said.

"After beating them in last year's regional final, we were able to once again thwart the Lancers on the road," he said.

Dale will lose nine seniors to graduation - Carpenter, Martens, Mills, Reid, Kuranz, Jake Christensen, Vince Dray, Derek Wulff and Harrison Klein.

"It's a very solid senior group," Dale said. "It isn't really possible to replace two young men (Carpenter and Martens) like that who have been the faces of our program over the years.

"Also replacing three starting defenders in Kuranz, Reid and Wulff will prove to be difficult. Landyn was a strong, contributing midfield presence for the past two years as well."

Dale said it will be an open competition to replace those seniors.

"The returning letter-winners will have to work hard to replace the nine graduating seniors," Dale said. "A strong JV team which finished with 10 wins will be asked to step up and fill several key starting spots and fight for spots in the rotation."
