Tosa West's Schaefer keys low scoring win over Brown Deer

Senior Emily Schaefer picked a good time to play her best game of the season as she sparked the Wauwatosa West girls basketball team to a 26-15 win Friday at Brown Deer.

The win gave the Trojans a 7-8 overall record and a 5-6 mark in the Woodland Conference West Division.

They have now won two out of their last three games.

The Trojans, facing a Falcons team that came out holding the ball, led 6-0 after one quarter and 12-8 at halftime.

"Brown Deer came out in a four corners stall and had no intention of scoring," Tosa West coach Ashley Imperiale said. "They essentially were trying to play keep away and not let us have the ball."

The Trojans were more assertive in the second half and took the Falcons out of their 'game.'

"We didn't finish in the first half, but we did a nice job of attacking and being aggressive in the second half, built a lead and that forced them out of the stall."

The Trojans doubled up Brown Deer in the third quarter (8-4) to take a 20-12 lead into the fourth quarter.

The 'difference maker'

They only scored six points, but doubled up the Falcons again in the fourth quarter (6-3).

"Emily Schaefer was the difference maker for us," Imperiale said. "We loved what we saw from her all summer and fall, then she tore her MCL and never really was the same — but she played great for us.

"She cut hard to the ball, was really aggressive and got to the line and she is really strong in our zone defense, which we went to in the second half."

Schaefer scored eight points, hitting 6-for-8 from the free throw line.

"I was very happy for her because she's been through a lot and has never lost a positive attitude," Imperiale said. "Her senior leadership and experience will be huge for us throughout the next month."

Junior Abbey Jones finished with nine points to lead the Trojans, going 1-for-2 from the free throw line.

Rounding out the scoring were senior Ashley Lindstrom, who added five points, and senior Amani Pettiford and junior Bri Colebourne, each with two points.
