Wauwatosa West girls track and field team win second straight Chris Wilson invite

The Wauwatosa West girls track and field team won the Chris Wilson Invitational on Saturday at Milwaukee Lutheran.

West ran away with the title, scoring 256 points to beat Port Washington (194) in the eight-team meet.

"We had a good meet for this point in the season," West coach Jack LoPresti said. "It was also nice to repeat as Chris Wilson Invitational champs. We had standout performances by a few athletes."

The Trojans had six first-place finishes, including double winner sophomore Azya McLin in the 55-meter dash (7.60 seconds) and the 200 dash (28.42).

"Azya continues from week to week to excel and improve," LoPresti said. "She brings a focus and an energy to the sprint group that is very exciting, and her teammates feed off it."

Senior Elise Ditscheit won the 400 in 1 minute, 6.25 seconds and also took fifth in the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches).

"Elise Ditscheit put forward an effort that we have just gotten really used to," LoPresti said. "Winning the 400, running the lead leg of the 4x400 that ran away from the competition and placing in the high jump."

Sophomore Anna Roghan was first in the 800 run (2:39.08), and sophomore Brianna Horton won the 55 hurdles (10.12).

"Anna won the 800 going away," LoPresti said. "An excellent race for Anna, and it should boost her confidence. She just controlled the race from the start."

"In the hurdles Brianna continues to make great strides," LoPresti said. "She just gets better each and every week."

The other first was the 1,600 relay (4:36.12) behind Cheri'A Adams, Roghan, Tessa Mallegni and Ditscheit.

Three individuals and one relay were runners-up.

Sophomore Mercy Ndon in the 55 dash (7:73) and juniors Hannah Doyle in the 3,200 run (13:32.23) and Alexis Hardy in the shot put (35-4½) finished second.

"Mercy had an excellent race," LoPresti said. "It was very fun to watch her and Azya go 1-2 in the 55 dash. She is another super sophomore."

The other runner-up was the 4x160 relay behind Adams, Ndon, Horton and Sheria Brown, running a 1:31.55.

Fourth-place finishes went to junior Sarah Lau in the 1,600 (6:21.76), senior Beth Garncarz in the shot put (32-8) and juniors Haley Barta in the 3,200 (14:30.89) and Mallegni in the long jump (13-8¼).

The other fourth-place finish went to the 3,200 relay (11:58.24) behind Hannah Doyle, Deanna Ross, Ella Hagopian and Abbey Kuehn.

Barta finished fifth in the 1,600 (6:38.59), Demyrah Thomas, seventh in the 55 hurdles (11:12), Brown, eighth in the 200 (31.57), Adams, ninth in the high jump (4-4) and sophomore Alyssa Goodwillie, 10th in the 800 (3:02.41).

"Adams had a solid day as well, running legs on the winning 4x400 team and the 4x100 relay," LoPresti said. "In the field, Alexis Hardy had an excellent put to go almost 36 feet — just an excellent throw. Beth Garncarz also placed as well as she continues her comeback from the flu."

West takes part in the Case Classic Coed Invite at 10 a.m. Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The Woodland West Division Outdoor Meet is set for 4 p.m. Tuesday at Pius XI.
