BOYS BASKETBALL East to face Lancers Friday

Feb. 15, 2012

The Wauwatosa East boys will travel to Brookfield Central on Friday with a chance to get some revenge against the Lancers, who knocked them out of the Greater Metro Conference race and started their current funk.

The Red Raiders (13-6) were 5-0 on Jan. 13 when they dropped a 76-63 decision to Central at home. Since that game, they are 3-4 in conference play

The good news was Tosa East snapped a three-game losing streak on Friday, defeating last-place West Allis Hale, 61-52 at home.

The Red Raiders are 8-4 in the GMC, but Menomonee Falls (7-5) is now right behind them, so their final two games against the Lancers and arch-rival Marquette (4-8, 6-12).

Tosa East held off the Huskies in the first quarter, barely leading at 14-12. But then things changed in the second period, as the Red Raiders went on a 16-8 run to take a 30-20 halftime advantage. Both teams basically exchanged baskets in the second half as the Red Raiders coasted to the win.

"In the second quarter we limited their touches inside," Tosa East coach Tim Arndorfer said. "We kept them out of the paint because they were hurting us inside."

Junior guard Nate Moore led the way with 14 points on five field goals and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Junior forward Kyle Vnuk was the other Tosa East player in double figures with 11.

The good news was Arndorfer got balanced scoring as six other players scored - Vince Cupertino (nine) while Diamonte Mckinley, Riley Poe and Mich Dillon each added six points each and Ben Carpenter added three. Devon Ross, a 6-foot junior guard who has only played in three games, also scored six points, including 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.

The Red Raiders' top two scorers - Anthony (AC) Carroll and Marquise Carter - did not play and their status for the rest of the year is being decided. Arndorfer referred all questions to the administration.

"We are in the process of getting the situation resolved," principal Nick Hughes said. "They will not play until it is resolved."

RACINE PARK

The Panthers (17-3) used a 16-6 third quarter to beat the Red Raiders, 60-47, Tuesday night in a non-conference game at Racine Park.

The short-handed Red Raiders played Park to a 27-27 standoff at halftime, but the couldn't overcome the third quarter lapse.

Jordan Payne of Park led all scorers with 21 points, while Mckinley had 10, Cupertino nine, Vnuk and Ben Mihelich each added eight.

Tosa East has dropped four of five games and three of six.
