Wauwatosa West finished fourth in the Woodland Conference Boys Tennis Championship on May 17 at the Village Club in Greendale.

Alex Chu/Dan Engel had the best showing for Tosa West, winning the No. 1 doubles championship.

New Berlin West's Luke Hubert won the No. 1 singles title, but Greendale, which won the tournament, won titles at Nos. 2, 3 and 4 singles and Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, scoring 48 points, 19 more than second-place New Berlin Eisenhower.

Following Ike (29) were Shorewood (25), Tosa West (22), New Berlin West (19), Whitnall (17), St. Thomas More (15), St. Francis (12), South Milwaukee (9), Greenfield (8), Cudahy (4) and Brown Deer (1).

Chu/Engel got a bye, then beat Greenfield (6-1, 6-3) and New Berlin West (7-6, 6-2) and then finally nipped New Berlin Eisenhower (0-6, 6-1, 6-2) in the championship match.

No. 2 doubles Ethan Fricker/Matt Stolz received a bye and then beat New Berlin West (0-6, 6-1, 6-2) and Shorewood (6-1, 6-4) but lost to Greendale (6-4, 6-2) in the title match to finish second.

No. 1 singles John Syburg beat Shorewood (7-6(7) 6-0), lost to New Berlin West (6-0, 6-0), beat Brown Deer (6-2, 6-2) and lost to Whitnall (6-0, 6-2).

No. 2 singles Brian Carlson lost to South Milwaukee (1-6, 7-6, 6-4), but beat Shorewood (6-3, 6-4) and New Berlin West (6-3, 5-7, 10-7) before losing to Greenfield (6-0, 6-1) in the consolation title match.

No. 3 singles John Kay lost to New Berlin West (6-4, 6-3) and Eisenhower (6-2, 6-2).

No. 4 singles Adam Carlson beat New Berlin West (6-4, 6-3), lost to St. Thomas More (6-2, 6-3), beat Cudahy (6-1, 6-1) and lost to Whitnall (6-3, 3-6, 10-7).

"I was very pleased with our overall performance," Tosa West coach Kosta Zervas said. "We had a nice day of tennis. Had we won a few more matches here and there, we would have made a run at finishing even higher.

"Again, our No. 1 and 2 doubles teams really stepped up and played solid tennis. Ethan and Matt finished second and Alex and Dan were conference champs. I was especially happy with Alex and Dan.

"They're establishing themselves as a quality doubles team. They had a really slow start in the championship match, but were able to regroup, readjust and dominate the final two sets (0-6, 6-1, 6-2). They're a special team and one that doesn't come along very often. They can make a nice run in the playoffs."

The Trojans finished fifth with six points at Monday's subsectional at Tosa West and it was Chu/Engel who moved on to Wednesday's sectional at Brookfield Central.
