Wauwatosa East soccer coach Lauren Cervero has her team working overtime and she is certainly happy with the results.

The Red Raiders opened their season by winning three non-conference games - beating Pewaukee, 2-1, in double overtime March 27 and Greendale, 1-0, in overtime two days later at home.

The Red Raiders (3-0) began this week with a 2-0 win on Monday at Kenosha Bradford - winning in regulation.

"As to our 3-0 start, we are a young and individually talented team so it is all about building our confidence, quickening our speed of play as a team and learning the ins and outs of each other play," Cervero said. "I am very proud of our 3-0 start and see great promise in our team."

Junior Alayah Walls and freshman Katie Hoefgen combined on a score first, with Walls drilling in a shot at 36 minutes, 17 seconds.

Tosa East's defense then took over and held off the Red Devils until under four minutes was left in the game.

This time it was freshman Chrissy Hoefgen passing to sophomore Katie Salmon for the goal at 76:30, clinching the win.

Pewaukee

In the win over the Pirates in the opener, the Red Raiders scored first and last.

East's Katie Salmon scored at 9 minutes and 15 seconds on a pass from Katie Hoefgen for a 1-0 lead in the first half. Then Pewaukee's Jordan Blaser scored at 63:49 and that was it for regulation.

After a scoreless first overtime, the Red Raiders scored 1:14 into the second extra period when Walls drilled in the winning goal.

Greendale

Two nights later at home the Red Raiders and Panthers were scoreless in regulation. But then 6:49 into the overtime, freshman Rebecca Pallo scored and was assisted by junior defender Margaret Geertsen.

Preview

Cervero has 11 returning letter winners, including first-team all-conference choice Walls (captain) and Salmon, sophomore McKenna Kowalski, junior Geertsen (captain) and senior goalkeeper Lauren 'Daisy' Wedel, all honorable mention selections.

The other returnees are seniors Maddie Packard, Amanda Babler (captain) and Katherine Oleniczak, junior Shea Conway and sophomores Sammi Osinski and Christina Chen.

"As for our outlook for the season, we have five freshmen on our varsity team this year, which in addition to our six sophomores, makes us a relatively young team," Cervero said. "But paired with the veterans we hope to mirror the success we had in our well-fought battle against Pewaukee."
