Hornets claim Breitlow crown

The Hornets won all their games last week, including capturing the title in the Dale Breitlow Memorial Tournament.

Highlights of their contests are as follows:

Hornets 21, Yellow Jackets 6: The Hornets collected 14 hits and scored in every inning but one. Mariana Ibanez-Baldor and Allie Kuhn led the way offensively, each with three hits and two runs batted in. Kuhn also allowed just one run in three innings. Margo Lipscomb speared a line drive at second base in the second inning to save a run.

Hornets 22, Yellow Jackets 13: The Hornets tallied four runs in the first, capped by a Kuhn two-run double. The Hornets fell behind, but got back into the game with the help of some good defensive plays like a snag by Jari Haeflinger to end the fifth inning and fine plays by Kat Terwelp at shortstop, accounting for two outs in the final inning. Ibanez-Baldor provided the offensive highlight of the game, crushing a three-run triple in the final inning.

Hornets 12, Yellow Jackets 11: The two teams met in the second round of the Tosa Girls Fastpitch tournament. Kuhn pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the second, striking out the final batter. The Hornets finally got on board in the third with four runs, highlighted by Margaret Radske's two-run double and one of Jessica Marty's two RBIs in the game. In the bottom of the final inning, Lipscomb smashed a line drive to bring in the winning run.

Hornets 18, Flames 4: The Hornets started out strong in the Breitlow Memorial Tournament, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first for an 8-1 lead. The Hornets put together seven hits in the inning, highlighted by an Emily Becker two-run double and capped by Lipscomb's RBI triple. Becker followed that up in the top of the second by striking out the side in order. The Hornets scored 10 runs in the final three innings to pull away. Ibanez-Baldor lead the offensive outburst by providing four RBIs and four hits.

Hornets 19, Storm 2: The Hornets came out strong and never relented, scoring in every frame and collecting 17 hits. Ibanez-Baldor destroyed the ball in the fourth for a solo home run. Lipscomb had a searing triple to start the fifth inning for her fourth hit of the game. Haeflinger provided the defensive play of the game, snagging a pop-up and zipping the ball to second to double off the runner in the first inning.
