HURRICANES BOYS SWIMMING

The Wauwatosa Hurricanes finished fourth (319) in Saturday's Woodland Conference Championships at Greenfield.

Jack Lutz placed in two events, including Tosa's highest finish - second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 4.37 seconds. He also took fifth in the 100 butterfly (58.40).

The Hurricanes also had two relay teams finish third - the 200 medley relay of Eddie Galindo, Michael Siverling, Lutz and Jake Falk (1:45.14) and the 400 free relay of Falk, Lutz, Galindo and Max Brovarney (3:27.33)

Both Brovarney and Galindo also took third in individual events. Brovarney was third in the 100 freestyle (53.10) and Galindo took third in 100 backstroke (55.81).

Tosa had two divers also place as the veteran Tony Benz finished fourth in 1-meter diving with 353.85 points and Kellen Moye took eighth with 247.75 points.

Brovarney also finished fourth in the 50 free (23.68) and Falk finished fourth in the 100 fly (58.39).

The 200 free relay of Edward Liewen, Sam Hieresman, Jonah Robinson and Brovarney finished fifth (1:39.40).

Rounding out Top-10 performances were Falk taking sixth in the 200 free (1:55.82), Siverling finishing sixth in the 500 free (5:17.53) and Siverling taking eighth in 100 breaststroke (1:09.36).

The Hurricanes next take part in the Nicolet Sectional on Saturday.

WEST BOYS BASKETBALL

The Trojans dropped a 74-53 decision Friday at Tosa West for their seventh straight loss, fourth straight in Woodland Conference action.

As has been the case several time this year, one bad quarter hurt Wauwatosa West once again Friday.

Pius XI 48, Tosa West 43 is what happened in the first, third and fourth quarters. But you have to count all four quarters, so a 26-10 second period just put the Trojans away early.

The Trojans battled the Popes to a 14-14 first-quarter standoff, but then Pius XI when on a 26-10 run and a 40-24 lead at intermission. Pius XI won the last two quarters by five points (34-29), but it was too late for Tosa West.

"We came out flat in the second quarter, which was particularly disappointing considering how well we played at Brown Deer," coach Chad Stelse said. "Our defensive effort wasn't there and we had no answer for Levi Bradley.

"Offensively, we didn't move the ball well enough and we did way too much standing off the ball," he continued. "We are effective when we are moving the basketball and cutting hard off the ball and against Pius XI we did neither."

Levi Bradley drilled in 24 points to lead the Popes, while Robert Holschuh (14), Donovan Jackson (12) and Darrius Nance (10) gave Pius XI four players in double figures.

Both teams put on a good show from the free-throw line, as the Trojans were 8-for-10 and the Popes were a perfect 15-for-15, a combined 23-for-25, a .920 shooting percentage. That's not something you see in high school basketball.

Tosa West's Reggie Cason, a 5-foot-10 inch junior guard, led the way with 13 points, nailing three 3-pointers in the process. Sophomore guard Andre Carroll was the only other Trojan in double figures with 12 points as he tossed in two 3-pointers.

The Trojans traveled to New Berlin West on Tuesday and took on a rejuvenated Vikings team, who came into the game with a two-game winning streak. Tosa West went home helping the Vikings extend that winning streak to three.

The Vikings prospered from the free-throw line, hitting 25-for-37, while the Trojans managed only 6-for-9 attempts.

Austin Fitz had 19 points, 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Scott Reichel, 5-for-8 from the free-throw line and Tyler Thompson, 6-for-8 from the free-throw line, managed 16 each. Darin Sowinski scored 11.

Carroll had 17 points, including 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, and Cason had 14, including four 3s.

EAST GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Wauwatosa East girls basketball team led Sussex Hamilton after the first quarter, but then the unbeaten, first-place team in the Greater Metro Conference threw it into high gear in the second quarter.

The Red Raiders jumped off to an 8-4 first-quarter score, doubling up the Chargers, but then the league leaders (10-0) said enough was enough.

The Chargers came out and went on a 20-1 run in the second quarter, taking a 24-9 lead into halftime. Sussex came out after half and continued to pile it on (16-3) and took a 40-12 lead after three quarters.

The Red Raiders did play a respectable final quarter, actually leading 10-9.

Only five players scored, topped off by Katie Salmon (10 points), who was held seven points under her average. Chargers' star, junior forward Mackenzie Latt, was 7-for-11 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line and led all scorers with 18 points.

The Red Raiders started this week off with an impressive 57-41 win over the West Allis Hale girls, as they led 25-15 at intermission and 33-26 after three quarters.

Then Tosa East exploded, outscoring the Huskies, 24-15, in a huge offensive display.

The Red Raiders were 16-for-27 from the free-throw line, while Hale struggled with a 7-for-17 night. Only Delaney Mielke reached double figures for Hale with 11 points.

On Tosa East's side, Salmon had 23 points, hitting 11-for-17 from the free-throw line, and Alayah Walls added 16, including two 3-pointers.
