Tosa East drops GMC finale to Franklin

Red Raiders to play doubleheader tonight at McCoy

July 3, 2012

Wauwatosa East traveled to Franklin on Monday and dropped a 14-7 decision to the Sabers in the final Greater Metro Conference game of the season.

The Red Raiders finished the year with a 6-14 conference record, good enough for ninth place in the 11-team league. Tosa East (8-16) will now take part in the consolation bracket of the GMC Tournament with Brookfield Central and West Allis Central.

The latter two teams met Tuesday night at Belich Field, while the top eight teams also battled that evening.

Tosa East will be off until July 5 when the Red Raiders play West Allis Central at 3 p.m. at McCoy Field. Then following that game they will battle Lancers at 5:30 p.m.

Tosa East coach Brian Karas will start Riley Poe and Ben Plaisted today, but he was not sure who would pitch what game when asked on Monday night.

Whether they win or lose, the Red Raiders will be guaranteed a game on Friday against someone in the upper bracket.

State tournament starts

Tosa East will begin the postseason against Sussex Hamilton on Tuesday at Hamilton. The Red Raiders split two games with the Chargers, losing, 10-0, on June 4 at Breitlow Field but then bouncing back to beat them, 5-1, on June 22 in Sussex. Tosa East is 12th-seeded and Sussex Hamilton is fifth-seeded.

Franklin comes back to win

In the loss at Franklin on Monday, the Red Raiders and Sabers combined for 14 runs in the first two innings.

East scored twice to begin the game, but Franklin came back with four in the bottom of the first. The Red Raiders bounced back with three runs to take 5-4 lead, but the Sabers countered in the bottom of the inning with five runs and a 9-5 advantage.

Ben Carpenter singled and homered and drove in four runs, Steffin Uhrich doubled and homered, and Colin Trautschold and Derek Wulff each had two hits.

"They can hit," Karas said dejectedly. "They are a good hitting team. Tonight we put the bat on the ball, but just didn't get enough."

Middle innings lead to loss

The Red Raiders dropped a non-conference game at Cudahy, 10-8, on June 27, as they played well at the beginning and the end of the game, but those middle innings hurt them.

Tosa East scored five runs in the first inning as Jonah Meidl and Riley Poe had RBI singles and Ben Carpenter had an RBI double to spark the inning.

But the Packers bounced back with three in the second, only to see the Red Raiders had a run in the third for a 6-3 lead. But Cudahy then exploded for three in the fifth and four in the six to take a 10-6 advantage.

Tosa East added two runs in the seventh, but the Red Raiders' rally came short.

"We had a good start and a good seventh, but in the middle our bats fell deaf," Tosa East coach Brian Karas said.

Meidl went 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBIs, Steffan Uhrich went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two hit by pitches.

The Red Raiders outhit the Packers, 11-9, but left 12 runners on base and made four errors in the field.
