Wauwatosa West boys basketball clobbers Greenfield, Greendale

Going into this week, the Wauwatosa West boys basketball team has a three-game winning streak going.

The Trojans are now 3-3 overall and in Woodland Conference play, already surpassing last year's 1-9 league mark and 2-21 overall.

"The guys have finally felt the joy of winning and we will continue to build on these last few games," Tosa West coach Chad Stelse said. "We are attacking better and we're stronger with the ball the last couple of games."

After beating Greenfield, 62-47, on Dec. 11, Stelse's troops came out and ran away from Greendale on Friday, 90-75, at home.

The Trojans have shown excellent balance in the two games, putting four guys in double figures each time out.

"We have been more balanced the last few games because our guys are using and trusting their teammates more," Stelse said. "Andre (Carroll) has been doing a lot better job this season of letting the game come to him."

"He has a ton of natural ability, and if he continues to work on his outside shot he will only continue to get better."

Carroll, who leads the team with a 13.6 points per game average, is getting help inside this year from 6-foot, 8-inch forward Ricky Landers, who is averaging 12.5 points per game.

"He's continuing to become a bigger factor," Stelse said. "He's a huge presence inside and must be accounted for."

Early lead against Greendale

The Trojans jumped off to a 20-10 first-quarter advantage and maintained it into halftime, 36-26. They then tacked on another seven point advantage for a 63-46 lead going into the fourth quarter.

"I like how our guys adjusted - we started getting the ball in the middle of zone to Ricky and we were more patient as the quarter went on."

The highlight of the game came from sophomore guard Steffan Brown, who handed out 14 assists to tie a school record.

Brown also scored 10 points, finishing behind Carroll with 24 points, Landers and Blake Harvey with 15 points each in the win over the Panthers. Greendale's Jordan Perez poured in 22 points and Nick Dalton added 19.

The Trojans got to the free throw line 23 times and converted 18, a .783 success rate.

Big fourth versus Greenfield

After battling the Hustlin' Hawks for three quarters, the Trojans pulled away in the fourth period to come away with an impressive 62-47 victory Dec. 11 at home, their second straight victory.

They led 26-19 at intermission and 39-35 through three periods but then blew out Greenfield, 23-12, to win going away.

The Trojans had outstanding balance, putting four players in double figures.

Landers had 19 points, Brown had 14 points, including 6-for-6 from the free throw line, and Harvey and Carroll had 11 points apiece, with Carroll converting 5-for-6 from the free throw line.
