West girls lose to Vikings, Popes

The Wauwatosa West girls basketball team dropped two games last week, a non-conference game against Waukesha North and a Woodland West game to first-place Pius XI.

However, the Trojans also started this week with a 42-26 loss to New Berlin West on Tuesday at home.

The Trojans have showed excellent improvement this season compiling an 8-11 overall record and a 7-8 division mark. But last week Tosa West faced two teams with a combined 31-5 record and the results weren't good, being outscored in the two losses 102-36.

Non-conference loss

First Tosa West dropped a 43-17 decision to Waukesha West (15-3) on Jan. 29 at home, never scoring more than eight points in a quarter.

In fact, the game was tied at 8-8 after the first quarter, as Trojans fans had no idea what was about to happen.

The Wolverines outscored the Trojans, 35-9 in the next three quarters (13-3, 14-4, 8-2) to run away with the victory.

League leaders

Lizzy Connors almost outscored the entire West team with 15 points, while Dani Rhodes had 10. Elise Ditscheit and Abby Jones led the Trojans with six points each.

The Trojans then traveled to Milwaukee to take on Woodland West leader Pius XI (16-2, 13-0) on Friday and ran into a buzzsaw, losing 59-19.

Only five Trojans even scored - topped off by Ashley Colebourne's five points. The Popes had 12 players score, as Dallas Chladek and Ashley Pitroff led the way with nine each.

The Popes held the Trojans under 10 points in all four periods, giving them a streak of eight straight quarters without hitting double figures.

West vs West

The Trojans opened this week by hosting a talented New Berlin West team, which is 10-4 in the Woodland West and 12-7 overall.

They were trailing New Berlin West, 18-11, at intermission on Tuesday, when the Vikings came out and blew them away with a 22-8 third-quarter run.

Trailing 40-19 going into the fourth quarter, both offenses shut down, as the Trojans had a 7-2 advantage to make the score closer than it looked.

New Berlin West was 7-for-9 from the free throw line, while Tosa West only managed five trips to the charity stripe and only one free throw. The Vikings also had five 3-pointers to three for Tosa West.

The Trojans actually had eight players get on the scoreboard, Ditscheit and Justice Hawkins led the way with only five points each. Jones and Pike scored four points each and Colebourne had three. Claire Radtke had nine points for the Vikings, while Kia Richards had eight and Ali Boldt had seven.
