West gridders having dream season

Oct. 2, 2012

Of my six football teams that I cover, the biggest story is coming out of Wauwatosa West High School.

And I couldn't be happier for coach Matt Good, his staff and his team, especially the senior class.

The Trojans are 5-1 this season in the unbalanced Woodland Conference, second place in the West Division behind Pewaukee (6-0), which handed them their only loss two weeks ago.

With the Black and Blue Divisions saying goodbye this season, the new alignment saw Pius XI coming into the conference and St. Thomas More leaving. Joining the Trojans, Greendale, New Berlin Eisenhower, New Berlin West from the old Blue Division was powerful Pewaukee.

Pewaukee, Greendale, Eisenhower, Pius and New Berlin West combined for 17 playoff qualifications and 29 postseason games since the Trojans last qualified for the postseason in 2006.

So most "experts" figured it would be another long year for the Trojans.

But right from the beginning the optimistic Good couldn't wait for this season to start.

He talked about how hard his team had worked in the off-season and how they were looking forward to see it carry over into the regular season.

The speedy Trojans - and they are speedy - came out of the gates fast, crushing St. Francis (50-7), Whitnall (46-15), New Berlin West (46-13) and Pius XI (55-30).

They averaged just over 49 points per game in those first four games before running into a tough Pewaukee defense.

The Trojans scored first but the Pirates then shut them down and scored 27 unanswered points.

Good and his players didn't feel they played well and were upset in their performances.

So they came out against Eisenhower last Friday and destroyed the Lions, 42-0, going through their defense like a knife through butter.

Both lines don't get enough of the credit for their success and the defense has stepped in and has allowed only 15.3 points per game.

New Berlin West first-year coach Al Moroder didn't do Good any favors last week when the young Vikings upset co-favorite Greendale, 24-10, (4-2) last week, so a ticked-off Panther team will be waiting for the Trojans with open arms.

"This team likes challenges," Good said. And that shouldn't surprise anyone.
