WAUMC Lenten Cantata To Feature Performance Of "Who Do You Say That I Am?"

March 27, 2011

The Wauwatosa Avenue United Methodist Church Chancel Choir accompanied by an eight-piece chamber orchestra will perform “Who Do You Say That I Am?” on April 3 at 9:45 a.m. The church is located at 1520 Wauwatosa Ave. with parking available in the back off of Underwood Avenue.

This musical and theatrical work was created and composed by Lloyd Larson with orchestration by Brant Adams.

"Who Do You Say That I Am?" gives congregations a front-row seat to Jesus’ life, ministry, death and resurrection. The title question is answered through music and dramatic readings from the perspectives of disciples John and Peter, Jesus’ mother Mary, Pontius Pilate, Joseph of Arimathea and Mary Magdalene.

The work also challenges each listener to answer the question “Who do you say that I am?” for themselves through their own faith experiences with Christ.

Each musical piece in the 35-minute production is based on a Biblical text. The work is written to be presented in multiple segments during Lent or throughout Holy Week.

The WAUMC performance includes the complete work and ends with a resurrection anthem.

The First Methodist Episcopal Church of Wauwatosa was incorporated on May 22, 1848. In 1868, the 42-member congregation purchased the site upon which the current building stands at 1529 Wauwatosa Ave. The first church building stood until the fire of 1919. In April 1921, the congregation returned to the site to meet in the new church’s basement. The church sanctuary is home to a three-manual, 46-rank Schantz organ.

United Methodism was formed when the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged in 1968. Today, the Wauwatosa Avenue United Methodist Church congregation is 500 strong and firmly committed to inclusiveness, celebrating a diversity of people, ideas and cultures.

WAUMC offers two Sunday services, Christian education classes for individuals ages 3 through adult, a variety of adult and youth music programs and Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops. The congregation is involved with more than a dozen local, national and international mission outreach efforts.
