The community coffee house will open its doors again on Saturday, March 24 when two local music groups – Agape Praise Team and Hawthorne Hills Band – take the Fellowship Hall stage at Wauwatosa Avenue United Methodist Church, 1529 Wauwatosa Ave. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. with music from 7 – 9 p.m.
The $4 admission, along with free-will offering for light refreshments and onsite child care, makes for a fun, relaxing and inexpensive “date” night.
Parking is available behind the church on Underwood Avenue in the ramp and surface lot across from the fire station. Enter the building through the southwest door (red roof) just off the surface lot or the northwest door off the upper level of the parking structure.
Members of the 12-person Agape Praise Team will get the evening off to a toe-tapping start with a collection of vocal and instrumental gospel, country and bluegrass music. Songs like "Understand It Better By and By", "Days of Elijah", "Will the Circle be Unbroken", "Fire on the Mountain" by the Marshall Tucker Band, "Going' to the Place (That My Father has Made)" by Lyle Lovett and "Down to the River to Pray" from Oh, Brother Where Art Thou? will be featured.
A part of WAUMC music ministry since 2000, Agape showcased its diverse musicality during the church’s 10th annual jazz worship service in mid-February.
The Hawthorne Hills Band returns to the WAUMC community coffee house after its very successful appearance in January. The five musicians promise many new tunes with blues and acoustic rock added to its traditional bluegrass offerings. This band plays at private functions and local establishments featuring live music.
Community coffee house proceeds support the WAUMC youth group’s annual Appalachia Service Project mission trip. A team of young people and adult counselors will travel to Kentucky in June to help make homes in that economically-depressed area warmer, safer and drier for families in need. Projects can include building porches, stairs or ramps, repairing roofing and installing siding, insulation, flooring, drywall and sheetrock.
Wauwatosa Avenue United Methodist Church dates back to 1848 and began with 42-members. Today, the congregation is 500 strong and firmly committed to inclusiveness, celebrating a diversity of people, ideas and cultures.
WAUMC offers two Sunday services, Christian education classes for individuals ages 3 through adult, a variety of adult and youth music programs and Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops. The congregation is involved with more than a dozen local, national and international mission outreach efforts.
