The narrow strip of rocky bluff behind the supermarket at North 68th and West State streets looks more like an overgrown dumping ground than the national landmark it is. The Schoonmaker Reef is a geological gem many people aren’t aware of.
At a public meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17, in the Firefly Room at Wauwatosa Public Library, geologists Donald G. Mikulic and Joanne Kluessendorf will report on their studies of the 430-million-year-old reef. Those attending will be invited to brainstorm on what to do with the 2.4-acre strip of land at the base of the bluff. The land was donated last year to the city, which eventually may be looking for educational uses for it.
Mikulic, a University of Illinois professor, recently led city officials and Wauwatosa Historical Society representatives on a tour of the property. He said he envisions a trail being created between 68th and 62nd streets or further, possibly linking to the Hank Aaron Trail. Perhaps the recreation trail and a fenced preserve could be used for school tours.
