Four medical students at The Medical College of Wisconsin received scholarships from The Mead Witter Foundation, Inc., a private philanthropic organization headquartered in Wisconsin Rapids.
Founded in 1951, the Foundation is funded through earnings from endowments from family members of George W. Mead, I. The Foundation established the Mead Witter Foundation Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2007, to provide perpetual scholarship support for students from Central Wisconsin pursuing an M.D. degree at the Medical College.
This year’s recipients each received a $3,750 Mead Witter Foundation Scholarship Award. They are:
Adam Covach, son of John and Margaret Covach of Omro, graduated from Winneconne High School and received his bachelor of science degree in clinical laboratory science from Marquette University. A fourth-year medical student, Covach plans to do his residency in pathology and eventually establish a medical practice in a rural area.
Karlye Rodriguez-Wisdom, also a fourth-year medical student, is the daughter of Peter and Janet Wisdom of Hayward. She attended Hayward High School and received a bachelor of science degree in biology from Middlebury College in Vermont. Rodriguez-Wisdom is pursuing a medical career in family medicine in a rural setting.
Tyler Ulbrich, son of Patrick and Joanne Ulbrich of Winneconne, graduated from Winneconne High School and earned his bachelor of science in biochemistry at UW-Madison. Ulbrich is a fourth-year medical student planning to pursue a residency in internal medicine with a focus on critical care.
Gretchen Wagner, daughter of Robert and Mary Wagner of Wisconsin Rapids, is a first-year medical student. She attended Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids and received a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry and psychology from UW-Madison. Wagner looks forward to exploring many different medical specialties and career possibilities during her four years of medical school.
The Mead Witter Foundation has a history of supporting private colleges and universities, primarily in Wisconsin, throughout more than a half-century of giving.
“We are pleased that two of this year’s scholars are from Central and Northern Wisconsin, our geographic focus for most Mead Witter Foundation scholarships,” said Susan Feith, vice chair of the Foundation. “Support to these students and all of our scholars at the Medical College of Wisconsin not only provides tuition relief for them, but also ultimately provides improved quality in medical care for all residents of the state. We’re very happy to help in that effort.”
