Dr. J. Douglas Rizzo Appointed Associate Director of Clinical Operations for the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center

J. Douglas Rizzo, M.D., M.S., professor of medicine (hematology and oncology) at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), has been named associate director of clinical operations for the MCW Cancer Center and cancer service line director for Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Rizzo also serves as associate scientific director at MCW’s Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) and is principal investigator of the Stem Cell Therapeutic Outcomes Database at the CIBMTR. He sees patients at Froedtert Hospital.

As associate director of clinical operations for the MCW Cancer Center, Dr. Rizzo will provide direction for cancer clinical operations while overseeing the multidisciplinary clinics and cancer service line, which is the largest of four service lines across the campus. Dr. Rizzo also will help to ensure that MCW clinicians deliver high-quality, research-driven patient care and to create an environment that is structured for and supports clinical research at Froedtert Hospital, and will work with the medical director of the Froedtert & Medical College Cancer Network to achieve similar outcomes there.

Dr. Rizzo received his bachelor of science degree from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va., in 1986, and earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., in 1990. He joined the MCW faculty in 1998 and received his master of science in epidemiology from MCW in 2005.

Dr. Rizzo is certified in medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. His research interests include late effects and quality of life after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), access to HCT across gender and ethnic/racial groups, and other health policy issues. His clinical interests include hematologic malignancies and late effects of HCT. Hematopoietic stem cells are the cells responsible for continual regeneration of circulating blood cells throughout life, and can be found in bone marrow, umbilical blood and peripheral blood.

Named a “Best Doctor” in 2011-2012, Dr. Rizzo is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation.
