The lecture takes place Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. in the Eckstein Hall Appellate Courtroom/Marquette Law School − immediately adjacent to the Haggerty. Each artist will present a 20-minute lecture on his or her work. A Q&A session will follow the presentations.

More information about the artists
Tyanna Buie
A Chicago native, Tyanna Buie was born the youngest of four siblings on the city’s south side. By the age of four, Buie and her siblings were placed in the foster care system where they were temporarily placed from one home to another. This experience has permeated Buie to reclaim and rewrite her own experiences through re-visitation and visual communication.
Buie received her Master’s of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the spring of 2010. Upon her graduation, Buie has continued her art practice by attending Artists-In-Residency programs all across the nation. In 2012, Buie became the first African American woman to win the Mary L. Nohl Fellowship, the most important prize for individual artists in Milwaukee. Her work and research has been featured in the Cue section of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in early 2013.
Tyanna currently teaches at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in Printmaking and Foundations.
Evan Gruzis
Born in 1979, Evan Gruzis is an interdisciplinary artist who is best known for his technically rigorous ink and watercolor paintings that combine seductive light and vacuous imagery. He received his BFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and his MFA from Hunter College in New York. Dark Systems, his first monograph, was published in conjunction with his inaugural American solo exhibition at Deitch Projects in New York. His work has been exhibited worldwide and belongs to numerous private and public collections, including that of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Gruzis is represented by: The Hole (NYC), DUVE Berlin, and Galerie SAKS (Geneva). He lives and works in Milwaukee.

Current Tendencies III: Artists from Milwaukee
Aug. 21 – Dec. 22, 2013
Each installment of the Current Tendencies exhibition series has differed slightly. For this show, participating artists from Milwaukee responded to works chosen from the Haggerty Museum’s permanent collection. The nine emerging, mid-career and established Milwaukee artists are: Tyanna Buie, William E. Carpenter, Evan Gruzis, Jon Horvath, Mark Mulhern, Jean Roberts Guequierre, Cassandra Smith and Jessica Steeber (in collaboration) and Jason S. Yi. This exhibition model aims to elicit fresh perspectives about the artists’ work by making conceptual or aesthetic connections to work from the permanent collection.
