Three MCW Faculty to Receive Distinguished Service Awards

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) will honor three faculty members with Distinguished Service Awards, the College’s highest faculty honor, at its convocation ceremony September 18, 2013 at MCW.
William B. Campbell, Ph.D., professor and chairman of pharmacology and toxicology at MCW, joined the faculty in 1992. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, and his laboratory has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for 36 years. Dr. Campbell’s seminal research on the regulation of arterial pressure established him as a world expert in his field, and he has earned prestigious honors, including the Novartis Award for Hypertension Research from the American Heart Association (AHA), the Paul Vanhoutte Award in Vascular Pharmacology from the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, and the Excellence in Pharmacology and Toxicology Award from the PhRMA Foundation. He recently was accepted for a sabbatical at the Magdalene College Oxford.
Nationally, Dr. Campbell has been a member of the Cardiovascular and Renal Study Section of the NIH and has reviewed grants for the AHA, Veterans Administration and Burroughs Wellcome Fund in addition to serving in an editorial capacity for numerous scientific journals.
At MCW, he has served on more than 50 institutional committees, and has mentored dozens of graduate students, fellows and faculty members.
José Franco, M.D., professor of medicine and pediatrics, joined the MCW faculty in 1995. A Class of 1990 alumnus, he also completed an internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at MCW.
Dr. Franco helped lead program development in Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin’s liver transplant and hepatitis treatment programs. He has served as Director of Hepatology and Medical Director of Liver Transplantation and has participated in multiple funded clinical trials.
In 2011, Dr. Franco was named Director of MCW’s Discovery Curriculum with responsibility for leading the development, innovation and integration of the new medical school curriculum. Prior to that, he was the chair of the MCW Curriculum and Evaluation Committee, served on the Dean’s Education Innovation Advisory Committee and is now Director of the MCW Standardized Teaching and Assessment Resource (STAR) Center. He is a recent recipient of the T. Michael Bolger Student Assembly Standing Ovation Award and the Ernest O. Henschel Clinical Teaching Award.
William A. See, M.D., is professor and chairman of urology. Since joining MCW in 1999, Dr. See has assembled a department of 17 faculty experts in all aspects of urology and is himself a fellowship-trained urologic oncologist who practices at Froedtert Hospital.
Dr. See has been a leader in clinical care, introducing robotic surgery to Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin and creating one of the largest renal and prostate cryoablation programs in the nation.
The current chair of the Medical College Physicians and active member of its executive board, Dr. See has also served on 25 nationally elected, appointed leadership and committee positions. He has been recognized with more than 40 awards and honors and has mentored students, residents and fellows throughout his career.
