Elm Grove, Wis. – Sure, everyone knows that red roses are the default Valentine’s Day gift. They’re a safe, reliable fallback. Yet, wouldn’t your sweetheart be impressed to receive more imaginative flowers that are equally beautiful, but still steeped in romance?
Originality. Creativity. Thoughtfulness. Valentine’s Day offers opportunity to display all these qualities, just by escaping the “dozen red roses” mindset.
“The incredible variety and colors of flowers offer endless options for stunning Valentine’s Day bouquets,” said Denise Barnett, co-owner of Snapdragon Flowers of Elm Grove. “Women love surprises, especially when they demonstrate thought and planning. Why not take advantage of the chance to show that you were really thinking of what she might enjoy?”
Daffodils, tulips, mums, asters, irises, daisies – all can be blended into an eye-popping palettes. No need to be stuck on red – hint, roses - when her arrangement can sparkle with yellow, pink, purple, green, orange, lavender, burgundy and white. Florists everywhere will seek ways to work in Radiant Orchid which, as Pantone Color of 2014, is identified as a hot hue in creative design. Radiant Orchid is a subtle, soothing blend of fuchsia, pink and purple.
“If you really want big points, focus on flowers in ‘her’ color,” Barnett said. “Take note of clothing and jewelry, and make this color a focal point of a bouquet. Your florist can blend this color in with complementary tones, or even create an arrangement that blends multiple flowers of a single color.”
Roses don’t have to be completely excluded. One or two roses mixed in with other bright, colorful floral companions resonate with Valentine’s Day tradition. Using a variety of flowers also offers the chance to enjoy them longer, Barnett explained. Species such as lilies and alstromeria can stay fresh for weeks on end.
Be choosy about the vase, too. A unique vase can become a keepsake to be used over and over. Barnett suggested considering different shapes, colors, and features such as etched glass.
“Don’t forget to order flowers early to ensure your choice is available and ready to go,” Barnett said. “Delivering even before Valentine’s Day only means she gets to enjoy them even longer.”
