Announcing the Wauwatosa Distinguished Citizen for 2013: Maureen Connors Badding

The Wauwatosa Distinguished Citizen Award Council has a long history of honoring the people who have made significant voluntary contributions to community life in Wauwatosa to make this city such a great place to live. Leaders in our school systems, fire and police services, civic, business, neighborhoods, community services, and historic preservation have been honored over the years for their selfless dedication to making a difference in everyone’s life who lives in and around Wauwatosa.

The Wauwatosa Distinguished Citizen Award Council is pleased to announce Maureen Connors Badding as Wauwatosa’s 2013 Distinguished Citizen of the year.

A Wauwatosa resident for 27 years and a tireless volunteer, Maureen can be seen all over our city, using her many talents to enhance our quality of life here. In addition to serving on the Wauwatosa Public Library Foundation and Friends of Hoyt Park & Pool boards, Maureen also serves as a board member for the Neighborhood Association Council (NAC), and she is currently serving as the chair of the first ever Tosa’s All-City Read for the NAC. Maureen has helped put together more than 20 different events celebrating the All-City Read, including a memoir-writing workshop, a build a Little Free Library workshop, and a Young Science Lover’s workshop.

Maureen also has helped coordinate, and volunteers at, the annual Wauwatosa VillageGreen Street Fair. And showing her commitment to going green, Maureen created and is the coordinator of the ”Green Team” group in the Olde Hillcrest Neighborhood. She is the former president of the Olde Hillcrest Neighborhood Association and founder of its Beer Nuts group. She also serves as a Block Watch captain.

Previous volunteer activities include serving on the PTA board and co-chairing Scholastic Book Fairs at Washington Elementary. She was the spirit wear chairperson and worked on the graduation and ACAL committees for the PTA at Longfellow Middle School. She also served on the Orchestra Parents board and coordinated the publishing of the PTA Phone Directory at Wauwatosa East High School. Maureen was a board member and communications chair for the Tosa Swordfish Swim Club for several years.

You will spot Maureen volunteering at TosaFest and at the annual Firefly Art Fair (benefiting the Wauwatosa Historical Society). She is a driver for Greater Tosa Interfaith’s Older Adults program and a baker for her church’s meal program. As a freelance writer, she enjoys helping Wauwatosa entrepreneurs develop their communications programs. Spring, summer, fall, and winter, Maureen is working to make Wauwatosa better.

The public is invited to recognize this quiet, energetic, and reliable Distinguished Citizen and thank her for making Wauwatosa a better place to live, work, and raise a family. Please join other community members, family, and friends on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at the Blue Mound Golf and Country Club for the official Distinguished Citizen Award Banquet and Ceremony. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. (cash bar) and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.
