Announcing the Wauwatosa Distinguished Citizens for 2015

April 8, 2016

Since 1964, The Wauwatosa Distinguished Citizen Award Council has honored the people who have made significant voluntary contributions to community life in Wauwatosa to make this city such a great place to live. Leaders in our school systems, fire and police services, civic, business, neighborhoods, community services, and historic preservation have been honored over the years for their selfless dedication to making a difference in everyone’s life who lives in and around Wauwatosa.

The Wauwatosa Distinguished Citizen Award Council is pleased to announce Mike and Judy Doyle as Wauwatosa’s 2015 Distinguished Citizens of the year.

Wauwatosa residents for almost 30 years and tireless volunteers, Mike and Judy can be seen all over our city, using their many talents to enhance our quality of life here. Judy is the President and Mike the Treasurer, (former Vice President) of Tosa Skateboarders United (TSU). Judy and Mike responded to the tragic loss of their son Jack, by providing a gift to the City of Wauwatosa, in the form of the Jack Doyle Memorial Challenge Grant, to spur funding of the Tosa Skatepark. Jack had a dream of a skate park in Wauwatosa and Mike and Judy took on leadership positions with Tosa Skateboarders United, an organization founded by youth (including Jack) and adults to bring a skatepark to Hart Park. The journey was long and difficult, almost 10 years, but their passion, dedication, and persistence led to the goal of providing a safe place for our young people to play and have fun. As visible and passionate advocates for this project, Judy and Mike brought education, demonstrations, and fund raising for the skate park to numerous community events including the Tosa Farmer’s Market, the Independence Day Parade, Tosa Night Out, TosaFest, and Tosa Tonight Concert Series. Judy took her advocacy a step further by creating the Endless Skate Club at Longfellow Middle School as a way to develop interest and education in skating. For this effort, Judy was recognized by the Wauwatosa School District in 2011 with a Friends of Education Award. Mike and Judy continue to fundraise and plan with a goal of making the Tosa Skatepark bigger and better. Along the way, they have educated the public on the dangers of “the choking game” and other risky adolescent behaviors, providing an invaluable service to the greater community. Their other activities include serving the community through Friends of Hart Park with the Cleanup and Weed-Outs at the park and volunteering at Tosa Tonight concerts. At their church, Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church, they served as Youth Advisors, Youth Rummage Sale fundraiser volunteers and helped with the Easter Breakfast. Judy had previously chaired the Art for Youth program at McKinley Elementary School, been a Cub Scout leader, Room Parent and served on the Wauwatosa School Board. Mike volunteered as a Tosa League Umpire, Tosa Youth Basketball coach and YMCA Youth Basketball coach. In 2011, the Doyles offered a graduating student from each of the Wauwatosa High Schools a Jack Doyle Memorial Scholarship for demonstrating community involvement and service.

The public is invited to recognize this devoted, passionate, energetic, and persistent couple as the Wauwatosa 2015 Distinguished Citizens and thank them for making Wauwatosa a better place to live, work, and raise a family. Please join other community members, family, and friends on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at the Blue Mound Golf and Country Club for the official Wauwatosa 2015 Distinguished Citizen Award Banquet and Ceremony.
