Overnight parking passes in Tosa?

Issue: Why doesn't the city sell overnight parking passes? It would generate some much needed revenue.

Status: Lt. Tim Sharpee said this issue comes up time and time again, and it's always the same answer.

"There's a whole list of neighborhood safety issues when we allow cars to park on the streets."

Sharpee said overnight parking congests Tosa's already narrow streets, making it difficult for law enforcement and emergency vehicles to pass through. He also said that overnight parking invites crime.

The overnight parking ban is explicitly stated in the city's ordinances. There is no parking on any street between 3 and 6 a.m., including holidays and weekends.

The police department does grant each resident 15 free passes a year. Permission is granted to stalled vehicles, guests and vehicles affected by construction projects. Residents can spread them out throughout the year or use them all in one month. But once they're gone, they're gone - and the city keeps track.

Overnight permission can be obtained by calling the police department's non-emergency number at (414) 471-8430.
